Arnaud, a friend of ours from Paris, visited us for the week-end. Since he came by car, we were able to drive to the Savoie region, 1 1/2 hours north of Grenoble, for a hike. We drove up to Megève, a town not far from Albertville where the 1992 winter Olympics were held. We hiked up about 1000 meters and found ourselves opposite Mont Blanc. On many of our previous hikes we could usually see the tip of Mont Blanc in the distance, but this time we were only about 20 km. from it.
It was an unsettling feeling knowing that just yesterday two French hikers were found. They were hiking at 4000 meters on Mont Blanc, got trapped in a snow storm and died because the rescue helicopters could not get to them on time.

Lunch time--it was still warm enough for shorts, but once you sat down, you needed a light jacket or sweather.
