Apartment buildings sometimes don't have an elevator or if they do, they can be very tiny. The elevator in our building can hold 3 people standing very close to each other. To move in or out of an apartment you go through a window. This is the building across the street from our apartment.
The platform moves up and down the ladder.
Everything gets put on the platform: couches, beds, and sometimes a mover to steady the load. I have seen other platforms with a back bar to which the furniture is strapped before moving up the ladder.
