Monday, October 3--this and that

Yesterday our neighborhood had a giant garage sale, in French, a vide-greniers. The streets are closed to traffic and families rent a car-length space of the street to sell their stuff--clothing, kitchen wares, antiques, books, skis, and on and on. I think this kind of thing happens on a Sunday because the shops are closed and if people go to church, they might go to mass the evening before, leaving the Sunday as an open day. On our way to church we wandered through the streets, enjoying all the activity.

This morning on my way to the grocery store, I usually end up following parents taking their kids to school. The route I take is through a newly developed housing area, which includes a type of canal (with fish and lilypads!). Young kids often still carry the traditional backpack--a briefcase with straps.

Every neighborhood has its own elementary school so the kids either walk, scooter, or bike to school.

There is also an enclosed playground for little kids. On the gate there is a sign for the dogs--"I'm not allowed in this area".

Other signs are for people. This is a restaurant in our neighborhood, listing the formule du midi--lunch time menu--for 12 euros you can get a main course (plat du jour), a glass of wine and a coffee. The restaurant was closed today, but if it was open details of the main course would be given.
